FORT AMIEL MUSEUM

Fort Amiel was opened as the Cultural History Museum of Newcastle in 1990 at the restored British military base built in 1876 by the 80th Regiment or Staffordshire Regiment. It forms part of the Northern KZN Battlefields route as it served during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 and Anglo-Boer Wars of 1881 and 1899-1902. It consists of a collection of buildings including a Guard house, Cook House, Blacksmiths Workshop, Canteen, offices, Magazine and Shell Store. A traditional Zulu homestead, muthi garden and the Prince Imperial herbal Garden concludes the historical displays. Besides military paraphernalia the displays focus on the general Newcastle history including all diverse cultures.

The museum provides a research service through its collections, an extensive archive of historical information, library, and photograph and map collection. Educational programs and workshops are conducted for visiting schools and groups.

The museum site has a popular braai and picnic facility which may be booked.

CARNEGIE ART GALLERY

The Carnegie Art Gallery is a public Art Museum situated in the Central Business District of Newcastle, Kwa-Zulu Natal, adjacent to the Municipal Gardens.

Its collection includes contemporary paintings, sculptures, ceramics, fibre art, beadwork, weaving and wooden carvings by critically acclaimed and recognised South African artists. A unique and valuable collection of African Art & Zulu material cultural objects has also been accumulated.

The gallery is a many sided cultural centre with an important social, educational and cultural role to play. It has generated considerable donor support over the years, encouraged the development of craft production in the region, and it contributes to a culturally enriched life for the citizens of Northern KwaZulu Natal and to tourists visiting the region.

It holds regular temporary exhibitions and has an active outreach programme. It also organises workshops on a variety of practical craft skills. Isiphethu is an example of its success in this field, and the embroidered works by members of this group are sold through the Gallery Shop.
The building is a declared national monument and was built in 1915 as a library with funds from the Carnegie Corporation. It is in the classic Edwardian/Georgian architectural style and all the original features have been retained.

NEWCASTLE MALL

In 2007, Zenprop Property Holdings (Pty)LTD acquired the rights to develop a shopping center in Newcastle, KZN. Newcastle Mall’s first phase compromises of approximately 38000 sqm of GLA, situated on 21 ha of land. It is adjacent to the Blackrock casino and Hotel on the corner of Oak Avenue and Ladysmith Road, which is on close proximity to the N11.

Ground works commenced in January 2011 and the completion of this world-class Shopping Centre was done in March 2012.

Newcastle is the 3rd largest city in Kwa-Zulu Natal and is the administrative and economic powerhouse of the Amajuba District. Newcastle plays host to a number of well developed economic sectors including Agriculture, Industrial (Arcelor Mittal Steel, Karbochem, Silicon Technology), mining (coal) and manufacturing (aluminium, leather, textiles, clothing, cement, and automotive).

Despite it’s thriving economy and excellent growth potential, Newcastle as the regional hub of the Amajuba District and Northern KZN had no regional shopping centre. Newcastle’s immediate customer base of some 500 000 residents had to make do with fragmented retail within the town’s CBD, or drive 240kms to Pietermaritzburg, which had the regions only large-scale shopping mall.

Zenprop initially anticipated a regional centre of around 25000 sqm, but following the remarkable response from the major and national retail chains, the size was increased to 38000 sqm, with the potential to grow GLA by a further 15000 sqm in the second phase.

The centre now comprises of single level prime retail, air-conditioned space, within a generously proportioned, naturally lit, closed structure. Newcastle Mall offers the market a stable and increasingly affluent safe and convenient shopping destination, with abundant parking set in an open tray format.

Physically the centre promises Zenprop’s characteristic high quality of finish, with impeccable landscaping, abundant natural light and extensive use of materials that bear representative to the region’s rich cultural and natural heritage.
